This was a perfect year and perfect timing for a big Lewis family vacation. We went on a 10 day trip in which the first three days were spent at Lake Powell and the rest of the time was spent at Zion’s National Park in a cabin The kids loved the beach. They spent hours just collecting seashells, playing with beach toys, playing in the bright RED sand. The girls spent a lot of time on the beach with the kids while the boys were out jumping wakes, trying to flip around, cutting from side to side trying to touch the water with their shoulders. Haylee’s famous quote for the weekend was when she was getting out of the water one time she said she was “smokin’ wet”. It was so cute and everything became “smokin’ hot or smokin’ cold” as well. On the boat, Devin tried to be in charge of all of the ropes. He had to have all of them just in the right spot, he wanted to drive all the time and fix what he thought wasn’t working. He also had a great time picking up seashells and stuffing his pockets with as many as he could. The water wasn’t quite as warm as we all expected, but we all still ended up with sunburns, new freckles, dry skin, cracked feet, greasy hair, and we all became a little stinky. After Powell we went to Zions National Park to the cabin. The kids loved running around in a ton of space, going up and down the stairs, running from one bedroom to the other.
One day we went into the Park. We took sack lunches and had fun having a little picnic by the bus stop that would soon take us to our hiking spot. We hiked Emerald Pools with the kids. There were three hikes – to the lower, middle, and upper falls. The hike started out with some switchbacks on a nice path. The kids actually got a little bored with that. We walked past a waterfall where a few of us got wet. We saw little white frogs on the way up along with a ton of little lizards. Once we got to the lower falls we all decided we wanted to see just a bit more so we hiked to the middle falls. The hike to the upper falls was the best one for the kids. That is when they stopped whining. They were too busy climbing up and jumping over rocks, looking at the prettier scenery, etc. When we reached the top the kids played around for a bit throwing rocks into the little pool. Some of the adults went on a few other strenuous hikes. We started with Angels Landing. It was awesome. The last half mile of the hike is incredible. You are climbing up the face of the mountain holding on to a chain. In some places the path is less than 5 ft wide. On one side you are looking straight down 800 feet. On the other side you are looking straight down 1200ft. In other places you are walking along one face of the mountain holding on to the chain. On one side is the mountain side and the other is a drop off straight down for 1200 feet. The path is less than 2 feet wide. Once we got to the top it was gorgeous. We sat at the top, ate our lunch, and talked about how incredible it was. After that hike we rode the bus to Riverside Walk. This was a 2 mile flat hike that took us to the narrows where you progress upstream along the banks of the river. There were rocks you had to step on almost the entire time – and they were very slippery. Hiking the Narrows would have been great if we had the proper equipment such as good shoes, waders, etc. The nice thing about this hike was that you could turn back whenever you wanted. We hiked in for an hour and where ever we were we had to be done. We were soaked up to our belly buttons after we finished but it was fun and worth it. There was one part where Tanner gave me a piggy back. I would have been wet up to my neck if he didn’t help me out. What a good husband – taking one for his wife.
The rest of the week was spent relaxing, swimming at the pool, playing basketball, watching the NBA Finals, taking family pictures, and riding the four wheelers. They were constantly going and everyone had a good time on those. Uncle Aaron got a little crazy one time and tipped his over because he was trying to climb a steep hill. Aaron’s bullet bike was going a lot too. Everyone wanted Aaron to give them a ride through the turns of the mountains. The adults also went paint balling (while grandma and grandpa watched ALL of the kids) It was so much fun. They had quite the outdoor course. We had a blast, we all got a few welts, we were sore from bending down, running low, rolling around, etc. We decided it is just like laser tag you just don’t get hurt. None of us girls have ever played before and we all loved shooting the guns. When we came home the kids had a little presentation for us. They sang a few songs, said some nursery rhymes, and were all so cute. They did crafts and played with balloons (which Cody is terrified of).
Overall, a very enjoyable, relaxing week and a great vacation spot.
